Jacket; from married and unmarried woman's market day and festival costume As.1998.1.256 to 262. Base cloth of hand-woven cotton dyed indigo to almost black, with average sheen. Decorated on fronts and collar with bands of reinforcing cloth in pink, green and red with centre strip of very shiny indigo dyed cloth with lines of back stitching. On bottom of fronts is band of silk supplementary weft patterned cloth, below a bought ribbon in red and shiny gold metal thread, with sequins. Collar decorated with bright turquoise shiny cloth embroidered with floral design. On lower arms are five narrow bands of bought cloth; from top are applied bands: i) hand-stitched lines as on top of fronts; ii) narrow strip of coloured cloth organised to give sequence of short squares and long rectangles; iii) fine cross stitch on black ground with zig-zags and triangles; iv) six rectangles of different coloured satin cloth with repeated floral pattern in silk over paper cut-outs; v) supplementary weft pattern pieces as on fronts. Sequins throughout.
