Jacket; from married and unmarried woman's market day and festival costume As.1998.1.256 to 262. Hand-woven base cloth in cotton dyed indigo to dark blue with some sheen. No collar, left front overlaps right, long narrow sleeves. Decoration on front of supplementary weft patterned woven strip with strip of folded silk cloths above, with additional line of stitching. Side extensions in bought brocaded silk; one side green, then other pink. Lower arms of sleeves in six narrow bands, probably silk, badly worn. Rear has main decoration: from just below level of sleeves is solid block of decoration made of separate but adjoining horizontal applied bands with overall colours of pinks, greens, blue, black and white. Each strip has either a silk or a black cotton ground and the design is in silk. Designs are embroidered in counted work and cross stitch in geometric and floral designs, with random sequins.
