Skirt; from married woman's market day costume As.1998.1.246 to 250 a & b. Pleated. Base cloth of two alternating cloths: i) hand-spun, hand-woven cotton indigo-dyed to almost black with sheen on right side; ii) bought white cotton. Constructed of waistband with tucks at top; and of alternating seamed panels of black cloth in close pleats, and white cloth, less closely pleated, with 'wax' resist pattern in blue. Decoration of wax and/or resin resist. Each panel has the same spiral/key pattern at bottom but above are two bands of varied pattern. The pattern is emphasised by applique of silk-like cloth in strips and triangles in orange, green, pink and yellow.
