Jacket; from married woman's market day costume As.1998.1.246 to 250 a & b. Base cloth of hand-spun, hand-woven cotton dyed indigo to almost black with sheen on right side. Collarless, slits in side seams at bottom. Decorated on front neck and top of side fronts with facing of green bought cloth, and sewn across with horizontal stitches in black and white alternating with orange and red. Applied white commercial cloth at bottom edge and also in diagonals at sides. Back decoration at bottom edge of a series of cloth strips and a strip of silk embroidery, with similar triangles at sides. Edges of strips and triangle have shiny black cotton strip with cut-out diamonds, oversewn with criss-crossing threads. Colours used include yellow, green, bright pink, red and orange.
