Skirt; part of woman's festival costume As.1998.1.138 to 139. Consists of three sections: top - and middle in hand woven cotton dyed dark indigo; bottom layer in strip of hand-spliced, hand-woven hemp folded over so that both selvedges are at the bottom of skirt. Skirt has been pleated after sections seamed by machine, and seven lines of hand stitching by hemp thread hold pleated in place. The effect of the section being of a double layer of heavier cloth is that the skirt swirls out when walking. Decorated along bottom section only with three bands of wax or resin resists with appear as light blue against dark blue. Embroidered in silk-like thread in orange, green, red and white. Unworn, waistband not yet attached and pleated still sewn in place.
