A woman's tube skirt, a 'lawo'* [collector information], a sarong. Made of three equal sized pieces of warp faced tabby ikat cotton cloth, sewn edge to edge the selvedges. Cream/pink/red patterning on a mid-brown 'ground'. Large centre field ('ora') of ikat motifs ('kabhi', undivided) of alternating horse ('jara') and diamond motifs in both directions. Solid black band (mité meré) 34 cms from each selvedge. The identical outermost panels ('singi') contain smaller scale geometric patterning, including four small grouped diamonds (mata sa liwu). - The motif comprising four small grouped diamonds (mata sa liwu) represents a set of four gold ear ornaments, one of the required bridewealth goods in Lio marriages (source: Hamilton, Roy W 1994, Gift of the Cotton Maiden: textiles of Flores and the Solor Islands: 71.)
