- Curator's comments
- Text from Paine 2001:41: Patel farmers, Saurashtra, north-west India. Marriage canopy ‘chandarvo'. These canopies are erected outside the bride's home on the occasion of marriage, and sometimes even hung across the street. The base fabric is plain white cotton, embroidered in multicoloured cotton thread, mainly in herringbone stitch. The pattern features various Hindu deities, including Garnesh the elephant god, remover of obstacles and a favourite motif in household textiles.
