- Curator's comments
- 'The 11 pieces shown here area part of a collection of 32 traditional textiles which was recently purchased by the Museum ... £2,005. The collection was acquired by the Vendor mainly by gift during 1970 - 72 when tutor to the Bhutanese Royal Family.
All Bhutanese textiles are made in strips of certain fixed widths. Depending on their intended use, these can be sewn together or used singly. The materials represented in this collection are cotton, wool and silk, but in some parts of the country yarn is spun from nettle-fibres and woven into utilitarian items such as bags and blankets with minimal adornment.
The use of aniline dyes has become popular in Bhutan, as elsewhere, with particular preference for bright pink, but most designs have otherwise remained strictly traditional. Newer forms of ornamentation are produced for the local market, and like traditional ones, mainly on the narrow, back-strap loom, or else by embroidery.' [Text to accompany a Trustees' viewing?]
