2016 National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage catalogue entries:
'This type of hairpin was used by ladies to hold their chignon in place. The dragon-head ornamentation is gilded, but the main stem, possibly made with silver, is discolored. The dragon’s eyes, mouth, ears, and nose are covered with red pigment, and several coils of thin gold thread are attached to its face with a filigree technique. The neck is carved with scale patterns. Hairpins with dragon decorations were originally reserved for royal ladies only, but from the late Joseon, common women could use this special hairpin for a wedding ceremony. This particular hairpin is presumed to have been used by commoners.'
