A rectangular (tabby) cotton batik panel; function unknown. Reverse in white linear designs against blue ground, pattern of lar, meru, pavilions etc. Border of triangles which enclose leaf and tendril shapes. On front the outline of the triangles and the leaf and tendril shapes have been covered in gold [leaf or powder or paint?] of which some has come off. The rest of the triangle is undyed. All the rest of the design, apart from a few lines of white dots, has been gilded. Three edges finely hemmed, one selvedge. [Text written by Dr Fiona Kerlogue, Horniman Museum.]

- Curator's comments
- Lar: this is the term for the wings of the mythical Garuda. Strictly speaking, the lar motif applies to those patterns where a single wing appears. Where two wings are evident the motif is known as ‘mirong', while both wings and a fan-shaped tail are called ‘sawat'.
