Description
Diptych print, colour woodblock. Double portrait of kabuki actors Ichikawa Ebizo V (Danjuro VII) as Seno’o Taro (right), and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Shibuya Kaneomaru Masatoshi (left), in a ‘Shibaraku’ scene from the play ‘Koi yoriiru tsui no yumitori (恋入対弓取) by Kanazawa Ryugyoku II; performed at the Ichimura-za in the 11th month of 1833 (Tenpo 4). The young Danjuro VIII is depicted on the ‘hanamichi’ runway delivering the ‘tsurane’ speech of self-introduction, as Ebizo looks on from the main stage.
