- Curator's comments
- The child is staring into the bowl in fascination at the goldfish – sugar sweets, not live ones. The fashionably-dressed young woman is the main focus. Each of the five designs in the series features a striking background of striped fabrics. They were issued just after artist Kunisada assumed the named of his (deceased) teacher, Toyokuni I (1769-1825). He was the third artist to use this prestigious name.
