- Curator's comments
- This play is a famous example of a ‘naimaze kyogen’ (綯い交ぜ狂言), a work which mixes together characters and plot elements from two or more other plays to create a new work. In this case, the story borrows from ‘Kagamiyama kokyo no nishikie’, ‘Sakurahime Azuma bunsho’, ‘Sumidagawa Gonichi no omokage’ and even ‘Kyoganoko musume Dojoji’. However, though set amidst the blossoming cherry trees at Shinkiyomizu Temple from Act I of the play, it is unlikely that all of these characters appeared in the same scene. It was in this month that Ichikawa Danjuro VII took back the name Ebizo V while his young son became Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in a double ‘shumei’ name-taking ceremony at the Ichimura-za. The print acknowledges this fact by including Danjuro VIII as the ‘uiro’ medicine peddler, a character who does not appear in this play at all. It was also in this month that the ‘Kabuki Juhachiban’ (a group of 18 plays chosen by Ebizo V to represent the art characteristic of his acting house) were formally established. ‘Uiro uri’ was included in that group, as was the second play on the programme this month, ‘Sukeroku yukari no Edo zakura’. The ‘uiro’ peddler is thought to have appeared in ‘Sukeroku’. (Paul Griffith, 21/03/2022)
