- Curator's comments
- In this scene, which is a parody of the famous Act VII (‘The Ichiriki Teahouse’, 一力茶屋) from the play ‘Kanadehon Chushingura’, the character of Kurobei is attempting to read the contents of the letter scroll by looking at its reflection on his sword blade. The actor Danjuro played two roles in the same scene by quick-changing from one to the other using the acting and costume technique called ‘hayagawari’ (早変わり). (Paul Griffith, 23/4/2022)
