- Curator's comments
- A sequence of numbers from 1 to 9 appears via light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which then go dark momentarily. "The gap between counting cycles – the zero – represents a pause of breath, the "space of death” before life begins once more" (Rachel Kent, in 'Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect with Everything', Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia, 2016, p. 13). In societies obsessed with rising and falling numbers and technology, Miyajima’s works have a mesmerizing beauty which encourages us to reflect on mutability, in a manner informed by the artist's Buddhist world-view. This is from a series consisting of one 6.4m work, three 3.2m works, and six 1.6m works (two white, two red and two blue, including this one). (T. Clark, 7/2018)
