Curator's comments
There is a relief at the Peshawar Museum in Pakistan which is very similar compositionally (dated 2nd – 4th century AD). It has been identified as illustrating two Malla chieftains extinguishing the blazing pyre after the cremation of the Buddha. See H. Hargreaves, 'Handbook To The Sculptures In The Peshawar Museum', Calcutta, 1930.
