- Haikai verse was a style of poetry enjoyed during the Edo period by people from all strata of society, individually and together in poetry salons or schools. Woodblock printed surimono with a picture and verses commemorated haikai and other types of poetry gatherings and were mostly privately commissioned. This surimono with twenty-four haikai verses takes the subject of ‘autumn’ and the artist Bunpô himself contributes the first verse. The depiction of the bird and begonia is delicate and naturalistic, showing the botanical interest of the time, and is printed with skilful precision. This print demonstrates Bunpô’s role in society as an artist and a participant in literary circles, as well as showing part of the social networks active in early 19th-century Kyoto.
