- Curator's comments
- This large jar perhaps once contained alcohol. The dynamic design of a dragon flying amongst clouds is painterly and resonates with popular pictorial imagery of the period. This painting style is characteristic of the Arita kilns. The outline of the design is drawn with a fine brush and then a larger one is used to colour it in with dami, a cobalt wash. There are also two prominent characters on the jar’s body, reading ‘Kawanami’ (川浪), the name of the store that commissioned the piece. There are similar characters on the base along with the date.
