Curator's comments
Iruka Daijin is one of kabuki's great super-villains. Originally a puppet play by Chikamatsu Hanji, first performed in 1771, 'Imoseyama onna teikin' was adapted for kabuki and is still regularly performed. The play treats the struggle between Soga no Iruka (d. 645 CE) and Fujiwara no Kamatari (614-669 CE) for control of Japan (Gerstle 2005, cat. 163).
