- Curator's comments
- Rikan appears in the role of Yoshizane, a muscular and sexy rough-edged character, who is nonetheless loyal and even willing to sacrifice his own son for the cause of an imperial prince. In the same performance Rikan also played another role as the famous aristocrat-calligrapher Ono no Tofu, a constrasting portrayal of an elegant and refined gentleman scholar which was received with great acclaim. The play was originally a puppet drama, first performed in Osaka in 1754 (Gerstle 2005, cat. 114).
