- Curator's comments
- The collection of 82 pieces of Japanese textiles—mostly kimono and obi—was given to the British Museum by Miss Kumiko Nishihara of Tokyo, Japan, in February 2014. She is the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Naokado Nishihara, a senior official in the Ministry of Finance, Japan, and the late Suzuko Nishihara (1917–2006; née Kaneko). The items in this bequest were selected from those inherited on her mother’s death in 2006. They were made for and worn by her maternal forebears: great-grandmother (Tatsuko Kaneko), grandmother (Miyoko Kaneko), mother (Suzuko Nishihara), and by her elder sisters (Minako Hiratsuka and Kayoko Arima). Some date from the Meiji era, including fine examples of bridal and formal wear, and others of equally high quality from the Taisho and Showa eras. The later examples from the Showa era include rozashi tapestry work by Suzuko Nishihara, incorporated into her kimono and obi. The collection thus spans a hundred years of fine kimono of an upper-class Japanese family, some pieces having been worn by successive generations.
