- Maeta’s works are sculptural and perfectly formed. Made partially on the wheel and finished by hand, they are unlike other contemporary porcelains produced in Japan today. The works, while boldly exhibiting their own style, are clearly a product of Japan’s 400-year history of engagement with porcelain. Maeta’s ceramics in particular reflect Japan’s continuing dialogue with the Korean peninsula, both in its organic form and in its pure white flawless body. A faceted vase by Maeta was featured in the BM’s special exhibition Crafting Beauty (2007, cat. no. 25) and he was shown at work in one of the film-clips that was used in the exhibition. This piece builds on and exceeds the earlier work by enhancing the facets so that they appear to have motion and by refining the shape of the vessel.
Maeta works exclusively in white porcelain to create innovative and minimalist works. The technique for making porcelain originated in China but was introduced into Japan from Korea in the early AD 1600s. For a vase like this Maeta begins by shaping the clay on a wheel. When it is partly dry he uses his hands to shape the form of the vessel, in this case with the curves that sweep diagonally across the vase. This surface manipulation creates subtle shadows that vary the tone of the smooth white surface and impart the illusion of movement. This work was exhibited at COLLECT, at Saatchi Gallery, London.
