- Curator's comments
- The artist has commented: "It was a cloudy day at Hangzhou Airport in China. This is a work that I made from a photograph I took before boarding a Japan Airlines flight on my way back to Japan. The cloudy day reminded me of a poem about West Lake by the Song Dynasty poet [Su Dongpo (960-1127)]. West Lake is always alluring. The line of vermilion color stands for the national flag of China.
"Rippling water shimmering on a sunny day,
Misty mountains shrouded by the rain;
Plain or gaily decked out like Xizi;
West Lake is always alluring."
These are the words composed by Su Dongpo comparing West Lake to Xizi, the most beautiful woman in ancient China. These poetic sentiments leave one in no doubt of the glory of the scenery that inspired them."
