Manga is a compelling medium that engages viewers through a dynamic interaction of pictures and text. Hoshino is a master of this medium, combining an intricate drawing style with historic accuracy and innovative storytelling. This is the first time a famous Japanese manga artist has been invited to collaborate with the British Museum, with spectacular results. Hoshino was given full access to the Museum, its curators and the collections. His drawings showcase some of the Museum’s most important treasures such as the Rosetta Stone (Room 4), the Lewis chess pieces (Room 40), Egyptian mummies (Room 63) and the Assyrian reliefs (Room 7). Many of the original drawings for scenes in this manga were lent by the artist to the museum for a special exhibition in 2011-12. (N.C. Rousmaniere, 10/2011)
