- Curator's comments
From the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-5 onwards, Japan took to the picture postcard with relish. The Kokkei shinbun (Comic Newspaper) was an extremely popular satirical journal published in Osaka from 1901-1908 by Miyatake Gaikotsu (1867-1955). In 1907-8 a total of 26 supplementary issues of the journal were produced which each featured 30 comic postcards. The title was Ehagaki sekai (Picture Postcard World). A few postcards were designed by professional artists such as Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934) but mainly they were the work of otherwise unknown postcard specialists, with playful art-names such as Bokuchitei Kuronbō, Komeno Hakusui and Nabezo. This publication also played a significant role in the historical development of manga. (T. Clark, 8/2011)
