- Curator's comments
- Toriyama Akira (1898-1994) was born in Shinagawa-machi in Tokyo. Having graduated from the medical school of Tokyo Imperial University he eventually became a professor and the head of ophthalmology at the Showa Medical School. After the war he rose to the position of director of the school and eventually became its president. An amateur photographer his work remained virtually unknown until after his death. Toriyama had joined the Japan Photographic Society in 1934 and his photographs are clearly influenced by the later pictorialist, especially Fukuhara Shinzo and his brother Fukuhara Roso. However, in his work from the late '30s one can detect a strong move towards more modern and often sculptural themes. Superb sepia printing by Toppan. Rare. Six copies in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/2007)
