- Curator's comments
- Photographs by Domon Ken, Kimura Ihei, Horino Masao, Watanabe Yoshio and other members of Nihon Kobo, an influential photojournalistic group headed by Natori Yonosuke. This book consists of a series of double-page plates on leaves mounted back to back to form a continuous double-sided panorama of subjects relating to Japanese landscape, culture, economics, sports, and the military. Each double-plate page comprises more or less elaborate photo-montages, giving it a dynamic sense of drama. This publication was not for sale. It was probably given to government officials and embassies to promote Japan's cause. It stands out as one of the best photo-books to have been produced before the war years, both in terms of the photography, design, and the quality of printing. Design by Kumada Goro. A milestone. One copy in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/2007)
