- Curator's comments
- A painting with the same composition, dated 1921, was given by the artist to Yokoyama Taikan (now in the Yokoyama Taikan Kinenkan); reproduced in 'Kitano Tsunetomi ten' (Tokyo Station Gallery, 2003). Another version is dated early summer 1921; reproduced in 'Kitano Tsunetomi no bijinga: Egakareta Naniwa jocho' (Hakubutsukan Meijimura, 1991), no. 9. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York also holds a similar painting, with a Christian icon for stepping on (fumi-e) at bottom left (2022.499).
