Made of ink and wash drawing on machine-made paper, this sketch shows the lengths to which Vietnamese people went to help the wounded: four women are submerged up to the chest in fast-flowing water, shouldering poles on which is supported a narrow bamboo floating bridge, while another two women carry a patient in a camouflaged stretcher across it. - Curator's comments
- Harrison-Hall, 2002:
Colonel Huy Toan (Le Huy Toan) was born on 30 October 1930 in Gia Lam, Hanoi. He has been the subject of many articles and films and is probably one of the best-known war artists. Joining the armed forces unit of the Vietnamese army in September 1947, he was transferred in 1954 to the politic general department of the army where he remained until he retired in 1992, attaining the rank of colonel. He participated in the Song Lo campaign, the Sam Nua (Laos) campaign, Dien Bien Phu and the Ho Chi Minh campaign against the South. During his military service Huy Toan drew and recorded the campaigns, returning to Hanoi to publish his work in army magazines and display it in museums.
