- Curator's comments
- Harrison-Hall, 2002:
Colonel Van Da (Nguyen Van Da) was born on 22 December 1928 in Hanoi. He joined the army in 1945 as part of the resistance against the French. He was with the army for forty-three years, attaining the rank of colonel. While he was in the army he was sent to the Fine Arts College, Hanoi, from where he graduated in 1963. His dramatic drawings record the enormous sacrifices made by ordinary soldiers. Many of his works are connected with the war, which he portrays in a vibrant and emotional manner. He is considered to be a true 'artist of the army', recording daily events and often drawing military action as it occurred.
