Miniature betel box, of Shan design, made of woven (plaited basketry) and coiled split bamboo, decorated with lacquer. There are no internal trays. The interior is a plain brownish red lacquer and the top of the lid has a yun design in black and yellow on red lacquer. The latter is a decoration of great density with 'lively dancing figures' (according to Ralph Isaacs - see unpublished mss. catalogue), though the details are difficult to make out. The side of the lid (exterior) is decorated with two rows of four strips of bare, unlacquered bamboo at least one in each row of which is notched. In between the two rows are registers of yun decoration, black on red, of wavy and straight lines. The dense decoration on the top of the lid, the bare bamboo details on the side of the lid, and the interior use of reddish brown lacquer are all features of Shan lacquerware production. The base is a plain cinnabar red, with at the centre a design of imitation basketry.
