- Description

Miniature betel box with two internal trays, made of coiled and woven split bamboo. Decorated with black and pink lacquer on the outside and plain red lacquer inside. The pattern on the lid and the drum is a poor version of the 'Pagan Age' design (in Burmese - 'bagan khit'). Such designs are based on mural or stucco patterns used in the 12th century temples at Pagan, where lacquer masters have been working for at least the last two centuries. In the unpublished Isaacs catalogue it says that this design was 'probably exclusively used for donations to monks.' For further discussion of this repertoire, see, Isaacs and Blurton, 2000, p. 116, cat. 58; for further examples, see 1998. 7-23. 56 and 196. The exteriors of the internal trays are decorated with concentric lines in the yun (engraved) technique. Chipped and bumped.
