- Description
-
The coarsely woven cane basketry (plaited basketry) 'hsun-gwet' offering vessel is lightly stained in dark red-brown lacquer on the outside with contrasting bright red on the rim of the main bowl. The interior is plastered with a lacquer paste (thayo).
The five-part vessel includes an internal tray not visible from the outside. As usual with Burmese food offering containers, the elements fit together with the largest (a deep bowl for rice) at the bottom and the smallest (a cup) at the top.

- Curator's comments
- The subtle decorative scheme is deliberate for it would have been simple to cover and conceal the basketry, filling all the interstices with 'thayo' and then smoothing the surface. Instead the lightly stained basketry is the main, and satisfying, decorative pattern.
