- Description
-
Flat cylindrical lidded box made of woven split bamboo, subsequently thickly lacquered and then decorated in the 'Japan yun' technique. The base is black, while the interior surfaces are reddish brown. The outer face of the lid, however, is decorated with a marbled design made by spreading gold powder in solution on to the wet lacquer surface and then combing it, both vertically and horizontally. This technique was first practised by U Tin Aye, one-time head of the Government Lacquer School who, prior to his appointment, had been sent on a scholarship to Japan, where he learnt this technique (hence its name).
