ここに描かれた場面は、『古今著聞集』(建長6年撰)巻第12から採られたもので、第82代後鳥羽天皇(1180-1239)が、山賊の首領・交野八郎を捕獲するにあたり、その武勇を示している。八郎は軍勢に囲まれているが、天皇が片手に船の櫂を握り、宙空に振り上げて臣下に号令を叫ぶまでは、誰も八郎に近付こうとしなかった。交野八郎はおとなしく服従し、後には後鳥羽帝の家来に召しかかえられさえした。
芳年は、体の線を朱でスケッチし、姿勢にいくつかの重要な変更を加え、その後に墨の線で「衣服を着せ」ている。低く取られた視点、極端な遠近法が用いられた小舟、そして画面を横切って突き出した巨大な櫂は、川岸の戦いという場面を最も劇的に組み立てている。この下絵から完成された版画は、キーズの作品目録にはない(Roger Keyes, ‘Courage and Silence: A Study of the Life and Color Woodblock Prints of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’, Ph.D.Thesis, The Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities [USA], 1982)。
