Gouache painting on mica of an Ayah (nursemaid) carrying a European child. The woman wears a white skirt (?) under a long red shawl, decorated with yellow edging and dashes. The shawl is draped over her shoulders and head. She wears a necklace, elaborate hair ornaments, bracelets and earrings. She holds the child in her arms. The child wears a white gown and black stockings (?). The Ayah stands on a blue and navy striped floor. The background is blank.

- This painting comes from a collection of eighteen mica paintings given to the museum in 1989 (1989,1225,0.1-18). The collection is made up of paintings taken from various different sets of mica paintings showing trades and occupations, natural history subjects and transportation. Such sets were mass produced from the mid 18th century to the mid 19th century mainly for the European market in India.
