- Description

Gouache painting on mica of a group of four women pounding grain and winnowing. Two of the women hold sticks which they are pounding into a container – one raises her stick whilst the other beats it into the container. Another woman sits under a canopy next to a white washed building. She holds a basket in her hands and appears to be winnowing grain from one pile to another. The fourth woman is shown walking towards the two women pounding grain, and carries a basket at her left hip. Her sari is spread so that it covers the contents in the basket. All four of the women are dressed in saris without blouses. The ground is indicated by a band of tan coloured paint with tuffs of grass in the foreground.
