- Bodhisattvas
Wood
China, about 900–1100
These two bodhisattvas, enlightened beings, were
probably part of a large group of wooden figures
centred on one of the principle Buddhas of the
Mahayana pantheon – perhaps Amitabha Buddha,
the Buddha of Infinite Light. They were not
conceived as individual works of art but as part of
a set of sculptures for display in a temple where
they played a role in illustrating the Buddhist
universe. The two sculptures were originally
brightly coloured.
