This cakestand and plate are from a dinner service made specifically for western use. Decorated in muted colours, with the famous 'spiderform' flowerhead chrysanthemums so admired in Japan, the asymmetric designs are characteristically Japanese, painted on very fine porcelain. Late nineteenth century foreign residents, travellers and traders bought home many pieces as souvenirs. By the twentieth century porcelain, still a novelty to many, was freely available world-wide. Complete tea sets and dinner services were soon available in stores throughout Europe and in America, where great interest was created in Japanese art, culture and gardens through a series of exhibitions.
