- Curator's comments
- The set of four handscrolls, one for each season, show annual events in Kyoto for all classes, from the formal observances of the court (nenju gyoji), through temple and shrine festivals, to ordinary street life. The fluid line and delicate wash style is typical for the Kyoto Shijo school, in which Toyohiko was one of two leading second-generation artists (the school was founded by his teacher, Go Shun [1752-1811]).
Displayed are: [Part One] Shishinden Palace and New Year games (spring); Kamo Hollyhock Festival (summer); [Part Two] Uzumasa Ox Festival (autumn); year-end activities in the 12th month (winter). (Label copy, TTC 2000)
