Porcelain, signed Makuzu Kozan
About AD 1900
Makuzu Kozan was a brilliant potter who claimed 10th generation descent from the early 17th century potter Miyagawa Yukansai. He moved from his native Kyoto to Yokohama in 1870, to manufacture an extraordinary range of porcelains for export to the West. He achieved a mastery of underglaze colour other than the traditional blue. (Label copy, VH, 1999)
