This copy was illustrated in black and white in Smith, 1983, no. 76. Like his colleague Hasui, Koitsu enjoyed the added range which the use of light and shade gave to the traditional landscape-print style, and especially the night-scenes which had been rare in earlier 'Ukiyo-e' prints. The majority of his known print subjects up to the Pacific War are of night or twilight or rainy scenes, and usually intimate and domestic in nature. This old-style barber's shop is in a district of Yokohama now dominated by heavy industry. The rainfall is represented by broken straight lines, almost in the style traditionally used in Japanese prints from the seventeenth century onwards.
