- Curator's comments
- In this print, maimed soldiers, in disarray and no longer identified by uniforms or weapons, present a picture of suffering and helplessness. The print’s full title ‘Relieve the Wounded. A true sketch of [the] Yeh-Pei front’ indicates that it was meant to be a truthful record. Significantly, translation into English was provided. The intention was to appeal for international humanitarian support.
Liu Lun was a student at the Guangzhou Municipal School of Fine Arts in the early 1930s, and an active member of the Modern Prints Society. With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan in 1937, Liu Lun actively participated in the resistance effort.
