- Curator's comments
- This print shows a towering furnace with sparks and flames radiating from it. Two workers in the foreground focus on their task, their muscular bodies glowing against the warm flames. Their figures direct our gaze downward at the crucible, where metals are melted. Like The Last Bullet (1980,0630,0.49), The Crucible bears the same strong imprint and unique signature of its author. The print’s texture is dense and the lighting dramatic. There is attention to detail and layered visual effects, revealing the influence of Soviet wood engraving, which Huang Yan greatly admired. The use of two blocks, one in black and the other in red ochre, is particularly successful.
