Water jar with carved design of seashells and waves
By Seifu Yohei Ⅲ (1851-1914)
The intricately carved patterns on this jar are well suited to the vessel's use as a water jar during tea gatherings, and reveal the artist's mastery of design. Born in Kyoto to a painting family, Yohei studied painting with the well-known artist Tanomura Chokunyu(1814-1907) and in 1866 was adopted by Seifu Yohei Ⅱ.
He was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1893.
