- Hillier and Smith 1980
'Ranma', in the Japanese house, were the transoms above the 'fusuma' and often of carved, or carved and pierced, wood. These volumes are, unusually, in landscape format in response to the shape of 'ranma'. They are among the first Japanese books to exploit the 'white on black' technique.
