Hillier and Smith 1980
Aesop had appeared before in Japanese translations, the earliest as far back as 1593. The interest of this particular edition lies in Kyosai's illustrations which are based very closely on the designs made by John Tenniel for an 'Aesop's Fables' published in London in 1848, but which succeed in being very much more than simply pastiche.
