Curator's comments: For his bird's-eye view of famous places in the ancient capital of Kyoto, Masayoshi (in Edo) relied heavily on illustrations from the gazeteer Miyako Meisho zue of 1780. Shown here are: Kiyomizu Temple (right) and the Great Buddha Hall (left). (label copy, TTC, 1998); Hillier and Smith 1980 A famous early pictorial map of Japan's principal highway, running between Edo and Kyoto. The hand-colouring appears to be contemporary. The colophon of this set is lacking, but the standard of the impression suggests an early issue. The albums fold out continually so that it is possible to look at a complete panorama.
