- Curator's comments
- Hillier and Smith 1980
The two opening illustrations are very much in Moronobu's style. The last of the 'kimono' designs is signed Eshi (artist) Hiratsugi. There are two variant, later editions in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, one with MS title dated 1697, the other with printed title 'Gozen hinagata' dated 1729. Needless to say, the reference to the nobility is designed to appeal to the social pretensions of the townsmen who bought the book, which is a masterpiece of design and black and white printing.
