- Curator's comments
- During the Edo period, "water bird" was an alternate term for sake or sake drinking (derived from a play on the Chinese character for sake). This book parodies a war tale to tell the fictionalized version of a drinking contest held in 1648 between the author, Ibaraki Shunsaku, and Ikegami Ukon Yukihiro. In the book, the contest takes place between Ikegami Taroemon of Musashi and Jiobo Tarutsugu of Edo (the winner and a stand-in for the author).
